Joburg and Australian PGA - Recap
Well it wasn’t to be for us in South Africa or Australia this week.
In South Africa, we had Dan Bradbury give a lot of great effort on Sunday to come in 3rd to cash our Top 10 and Top 20 wagers, but that was far too little too late for him to really give a scare to the eventual winner.
We also got Elvira across the line with a nice +330 Top 20 bet so all in all we lost a little bit here but saw a decent profit in the T10 and T20 bets.
Unfortunately, the Australian PGA went far poorer for us where we basically struck out on every single bet other than the one match we won with LIV star Joaquin Niemann coming through. Oh well.
Australian Open
The DP World Tour sort of stays in Australia to see which golfer will take home Stonehaven Cup at what Jack Nicklaus1 once referred to as the “fifth major”.
The 106th edition of the Australian National Championship will be taking place in Sydney when the players take on Mike Clayton-designed The Lakes Golf Club and Jack Nicklaus-designed The Australian Golf Club.
The 105th edition of the challenge was won by Adrian Meronk (25-1 odds) who shot -14 to beat former champion and co-2nd favorite Adam Scott (10-1) by 5 strokes at Victoria Golf Club and Kingston Heath Golf Club. The 104th edition, which was played in 20192, saw Aussie Matt Jones (20-1 odds) shoot -15 to capture his 2nd Aussie Open and beat 2nd favorite Louis Oosthuizen (8-1) by 1 stroke at The Australian Golf Club. In the 103rd edition, Abe Ancer (-16) captured his first Aussie title when he topped Dimitrios Papadatos by 5 strokes at the Lakes Golf Club.
The record for most Aussie Open wins is held by Gary Player who won 7 times and holds the record for the lowest score ever when he shot -28 (264 strokes) in 1965 to capture his 4th title when he beat Jack Nicklaus and Frank Phillips by 6 strokes at Kooyonga Golf Club.
Similar to the Joburg Open, this tournament stands as a qualifier for the 152nd Open Championship as the top 3 finishers, not already exempt and making the cut, will get into the Major.
South Africa Open
The DP World Tour continues its split start with the 113th edition of the South African National Championship. This year’s edition will be played for a 2nd time at the Gary Player Signature course at Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate. This course plays to a par 72 across 8,230 yards.
The 112th edition saw 3rd favorite Thriston Lawrence (20-1) capture the title when he shot -16 at Blair Atholl to beat Clement Sordet (100-1) by 1 stroke. The 111th edition found Daniel van Tonder (30-1) take home the title when he shot -16 to top fellow South African Oliver Bekker (40-1) by 1 stroke. The 110th edition was won by Christiaan Bezuidenhout when he shot -18 to gallop to a 5-stroke victory over Jamie Donaldson at the Gary Player Country Club.
The record for most South African Open wins is held by South African hero Gary Player who won his country’s national championship an astounding 13 times. Branden Grace’s victory in 2020 included the lowest shot total to win the tournament with 263 strokes, while Ernie Els has the lowest-to-par scoring record when he recorded -24 to win his 4th of 5 SA Opens in 2006 at Humewood.
I am going with 9.72u of risk across the THREE tournaments this week! Yes, I said 3!! I am going to take some shots at the Hero too!!!
