Barbasol Championship - Recap
So last week I got WAY too cute as I said I wanted to go for longer odds even though Norrman had value according to my model - of course he freaking won!
Thankfully I used him as a T20 and the week was not a full loss, but super disappointing none the less
Barracuda Championship
While most of the best players in the world are going to be battling it out at The Open at Royal Liverpool (here are my picks for that tournament) the PGA Tour is holding the Barracuda Championship as an alternate event for those who have not qualified similar to how they held the Barbasol last week.
This tournament was established back in 1999 to be an alternate event opposite the WGC Bridgestone and held in August but has since been moved to July and placed opposite The Open. The Barracuda currently calls Tahoe Moutain Club’s Old Greenwood Course home which plays across almost 7,500 yards and to a par of 71.
One of the things that makes this event so unique is that since 2012 the tournament has adopted the Modified Stableford scoring method. What this means is that as opposed to a score in relation to par, the winner will be the player who scores the most points1! This format favors bold and aggressive play.
The 2022 championship saw Chez Reavie (50-1 odds) capture his 3rd and most recent PGA tour title when he scored 43 points to beat Alex Noren (20-1) by 1 point. The 2021 edition saw Erik van Rooyen (50-1 odds) capture his first and only PGA Tour victory when he topped Andrew Putnam (100-1) by 5 points when EVR shot a tournament record 50 points, and 2020 saw Richy Werenski win with the lowest-ever winning score of 39 to win as a 30-1 shot when he topped Troy Merrit2 (40-1) by 1 point.
For those bettors who like to bet the prop markets, this tournament has been plated 7 times and only once (Scott Piercy in the inaugural tournament) has the winner won by multiple strokes3.
Obviously, we already have a full card going in Hoylake so I am going to be rather risk-averse here and taking only 3.7u of risk:
Outright:
0.5u on Stephan Jaeger +1400
0.25u on Beau Hossler +2500
0.25u on Joseph Bramlett +3000
0.25u on Akshay Bhatia +3300
0.25u on Justin Suh +3300
T20:
0.65u on Stephan Jaeger -1304
0.55u on Beau Hossler -110
0.25u on SH Kim +135
0.25u on Mark Hubbard +150
0.25u Akshay Bhatia +160
0.25u on Scott Piercy +400
As always, I am using BetOnline and Bovada to pull these odds.
Good luck with all your action!
Points are awarded each hole based on the players’ score on that hole: +8 points for an albatross, +5 for eagle, +2 for birdie, zero for par, -1 for bogey and -3 for double or worse.
This was the 2nd consecutive year Merritt came in 2nd place
4 times the winner won by 1 stroke and twice the tournament was decided in a playoff
EDIT NOTE: there was a typo in the original post that showed this as +130 when the odds were -130
