The PGA Tour’s wrap-around season ended at the TOUR Championship this past Sunday and what a way to go out! We saw Viktor continue his amazing golf though we did have some drama with him and Xander coming down the stretch for the unadjusted win.
This year the PGA Tour has changed its calculations for the FedEx Cup to start in January so the Fall tournaments (now called “the fall series”) are being played after the TOUR Championship but before the official new calendar starts. As such, I am going to do below a mini-recap now for the wrap-around season (Forinent through TOUR Championship) and then do a more fulsome recap in December at the conclusion of the fall series that covers the time from the 2022 Fortinet through the 2023 Grant Thorton Invitational. I will then move my reporting to a calendar year basis as the PGA Tour does.
Thank you!!
I really want to say thank you to those who came along for this ride!!! I know my posts can be super wordy but hopefully, you have had some fun and made some money with me this PGA Tour season.
This was my first FULL PGA Tour season and there were definitely ups and down. Still, hopefully, you have seen how consistent bankroll management, realizing when things aren’t working, making adjustments, and taking calculated risks allowed us to slowly but surely build a really nice return.
Wrap Around mini-recap
Now, let’s talk about the wrap-around season that started all the way back last August with the Fortinet and ended this weekend. First and foremost we topped last year’s total of 4 outright winners with an astounding 10 this go around1:
Shriners Children’s Open - Tom Kim 25-1
CJ Cup - Rory McIlroy 7-1
World Wide Technology Championship - Russell Henley 50-1
Cadence Bank Houston Open - Tony Finau 20-1
AT&T Byron Nelson - Jason Day 20-1
the Memorial (for a 2nd year in a row) - Viktor Hovland 22-1
Rocket Mortgage Classic - Rickie Fowler 14-1
Barracuda Championship - Akshay Bhatia 33-1
BMW Championship - Viktor Hovland 16-1
TOUR Championship - Xander Schaffele (72 hole score) 12-1
While those outright winners accounted for 35u of our profit we had about 10u of profit generated from our other bets!
I always think about sports betting similar to investing. If you started with a 10k bankroll you ended this season with over 14.5k! That is a 45% return! If you want to think about it on a per-bet basis, then we had a 12.4% ROI. Good luck getting that in the stock market these days!
T10, T20, and even the small shots at T40 we took all helped give us really nice returns over the course of the year. Head-to-heads were obviously a big sore spot and absolutely something I will be focusing on between now and the Sanderson Farms in about 2 months.
Oh, and we are now up over 100u of profit all time!
If you had a fun and profitable season with me, I hope you will come back for NFL season which starts Sept 7th! I put out my NFL Futures picks earlier this week so make sure you are getting in on the action now as lines are already moving!
Next few weeks
As you likely know by now, after every season I start with my tear down and rebuild of my calcs in anticipation of the new PGA Tour fall series calendar starting on Sept 15th with the Fortinet Championship.
After that, there is a break that includes the Ryder Cup until the Sanderson Farm the first week of October. Over that time period, I will not only be updating the model, but also analyzing my betting patterns to see what improvements I can make.
I may have some small DP World Tour action over this time period, but you will likely not hear a ton from me related to golf in the next few weeks BUT I will have tons of NFL content coming your way with the season starting next week AND I will be back to cover golf once the fall season really kicks off!
Make sure you do NOT miss my NFL Futures column which was published earlier this week!
